Ralph Rawlinson's Railway Roundup

Bluebell Railway
Track laying over Imberhorne Viaduct was due to start in December and when
completed shuttle trains are planned between the new East Grinstead
station and the tip.  These will form an extra attraction during the
line's 50th anniversary gala in August.

Didcot
Network Rail has offered the Great Western Society a new 35-year lease for
the Didcot Steam Centre.  This means that the GWS can now go ahead and
refurbish Didcot shed, the largest wholly-intact GWR steam shed still in
full rail use.

Bucks
Chiltern Railways has applied for a Transport and Works order for its
200m Evergreen 3 project that will see a new Oxford-Marylebone service
introduced, along with a new station to the serve the Water Eaton
park-and-ride site near Kidlington, the dualling of the Oxford-Bicester
line and a new west-to-south chord at Bicester,

Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway
The new bridge span over a minor road at the site of Laverton station is
now in position making it possible for the northern extension to Broadway
to open after the line's May GWR 175 spectacular.

Electrification NW England
On 14th Dec 2009 the Transport Secretary announced a 200m scheme for
wiring the following:
1. Huyton-Wigan 15 miles allowing electric trains Liverpool-Wigan via St
Helens
2. Manchester-Euxton Junction 25 miles allowing electric trains Manchester
-Preston via Bolton
3. Preston-Blackpool North 17 miles allowing electric trains Manchester/
Liverpool-Blackpool.
These three routes are in addition to the previously announced Liverpool-
Manchester scheme via Earlestown.  It was not stated if InterCity services
London-Blackpool and Manchester/Liverpool-Glasgow/Edinburgh are also being
considered.

Iarnrd ireann: Possible line closures
Resulting from the 2009 expenditure review the Irish Government is
considering the following line closures:
Co Tipperary/Kilkenny: Limerick Junction (excl) - Waterford (excl)
Co Wexford: Waterford (excl) - Rosslare Strand
Co Limerick/Tipperary/Laois: Killonan Junction - Ballybrophy
Co Mayo: Manulla Junction - Ballina

Tyne & Wear Metro
Modernisation of the system over the next three years will include
rebuilding of Central (Metro) station, five new escalators at Monument and
renewal of 18 miles of track, trackbeds and embankments.

Competition through the tunnel
Eurotunnel has given Deutsche Bahn permission to run ICE3 trains to the UK
although DB has not yet applied for any paths on HS1.

France-Austria
Reports (Raildate No 86) of the demise of the 'Orient Express' have
apparently been causing confusion.  The 'Venice Simplon Orient Express'
(VSOE) which has been linking Venice with Paris since the 1980s continues
to run.  It is the 'Orient Express (OE) launched in 1883 between Paris and
Instanbul, but in recent times reduced to a local stopping train between
Strasburg and Vienna, that has been withdrawn.

Poland
German giant DB Bahn is to launch passenger trains in Poland.

through Saudi Arabia, Bahrain.  Qatar and United Arab  Emirates to Oman
on the Indian Ocean, is expected to start early in 2010 and be completed
in 2017.

years.
